Ignoring or avoiding a debt collector will not make the debt collector stop contacting you. If you believe you do not owe the debt, you should tell the debt collector and request proof in writing of the debt. If the debt is yours and you can’t afford to pay it, you may be able to make arrangements and negotiate the debt with the debt collector. You can also ask the debt collector in writing to stop calling you, and also in writing, you should make sure to tell them not to contact you at your place of employment which should stop the phone calls. Again, this must be in writing . The law is on your side and there are rules in place called the Fair Debt Collection Laws.

Ignoring or avoiding the debt collector will only make the debt collector use other methods to try to collect the debt, including the threat of a lawsuit against you. If you are not able to come to an agreement of payment with a debt collector, you may want to contact an attorney who can provide you with legal advice. Your legal aid office may have information for you that can help you figure out your best course of action. You also may qualify for free legal services through legal aid or legal clinics, depending on your income and where you live. Either way, ignoring a problem will not make it go away, and the stress and worry of not dealing with it head on will only multiply. The best way to handle debt collectors is to talk to them and try to iron out a plan of action that will work for you both.
