When you don’t pay off your payments or debts, a debt collection agency or creditor can sue you to try to collect the money that you owe. If you lose in a lawsuit, a court could enter a judgement against you. When a judgement is set it states the amount of debt and money that you owe and also allows it so that the creditor and or debt collector can garnish your pay and also have a third party- your bank- transfer over fund from any accounts that you may have.
Wage garnishment is an action set by the courts that forces your employer to withhold a portion of your income in order to pay the debts that you owe. This can only happen when order by the courts. If a summons comes to you- it is advised that you do not ignore it as you will lose your opportunity to fight back or get this action reversed.
The Fair Debt Collection Act is a law that is set up to protect you, the consumer. Know your rights, and the limits that the Debt collectors have to abide by, don’t stand for harassment of any kind.
