Many debt collectors they can easily become aggressive when trying to contact consumers and collect payments. Their actions can become harassment, however, and you have rights protecting you from a debt collector’s threats. Under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, debt collectors are limited in what they can say and do while communicating with consumers. Debt collectors cannot contact you before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m., and they cannot contact your workplace to get information about you from your employer. They also are prohibited from using profane language or threatening arrest or legal action against you to do what they want.
